Self Defense for Seniors

I just read the story about a man named Mark Shuey who teaches seniors how to defend themselves using a cane. He calls his self defense course Cane-Fu. Shuey is the founder of Cane Masters.

It's a shame that seniors have to be worried about being harassed or attacked while walking home from the grocery store or just walking around the block. They are sometimes treated with disrespect and are easy targets for criminals.

Some of the self defense tips I discuss on my website may not work for seniors due to mobility issues. But, if you're a senior and you use a cane to walk with, that cane can be used as a self defense weapon.

The best way for you to defend yourself is to use the cane to strike the knee, groin or elbow. The knee strike might be easier to execute since it's lower.

As I always say, the goal is to deliver an effective strike to those areas on the body and then yell for help. As you're yelling for help, try to get away from the attacker as quickly as possible and get to a safe area, such as a store or a public place where there are lots of people.

It takes practice to learn how to swing the cane in a defensive manner, so if you can find a class that teaches self defense for seniors near where you live, sign up for it. You won't regret it.
