Self Defense Classes for Seniors

Senior citizens are learning self defense in Akron, Ohio with the help of a local prosecutor and a sergeant of the University of Akron police. They are conducting self defense classes for seniors so they can better protect themselves.

Seniors may not be as agile as younger people, but there are still some things they can do to protect themselves. The most effective way for seniors to use self defense is to make noise.

Criminals don't like crowds, and when you start screaming and yelling out, you surprise the attacker and hopefully scare him off so you can escape.

You can yell things like "FIRE!" or "DON'T TOUCH ME!". Anything like this will get people coming to find out what's going on.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, seniors who use a cane to walk, can use that cane as a weapon. You can hit the attacker in the most sensitive areas like the knees, groin or elbow.

The knee strike is probably the most effective because the attacker will likely fall to the ground which gives you time to escape.

If your local area has self defense classes available, especially for seniors, then it's a good idea to sign up for one. Just because you're older doesn't mean you can't protect yourself.

Criminals like to target older people because they think they can't fight back or they're too scared to do anything. The skills you learn in a self defense class will help you gain the confidence you need to know that you're not too old to look out for your own personal safety.
