Finally, Massachusetts might be changing a law which required state citizens to obtain a Firearms Identification Card (FID) in order to carry Mace and pepper spray.
Why Mace or pepper spray would be classified as a firearm I have no idea. The whole purpose of the sprays is to protect yourself from attackers. The sprays aren't even lethal.
Many women carry self defense sprays while they are out walking, jogging or just going to and from their car. They need that protection to lower the chances of them becoming assault victims.
What makes the Massachusetts law so ridiculous is that the FID card costs $25. The state is telling people they have to pay $25 in order to carry a can of Mace or pepper spray that costs between $9.95 and $14.99. That is outrageous!
And apparently the police welcome the possibility of changing this law. They recognize the necessity of citizens being able to protect themselves in a non-lethal way.
College students and other people from out of state found it difficult to obtain these FID cards. The violence on college campuses has risen over the years, so having self defense sprays to protect yourself is pretty much essential on campus.
Hopefully, this new legislation in Massachusetts will pass so people can protect themselves again.
