How To Secure Your Home From Burglars

Most crime committed in the United States is property crime. According to the Bureau of Justice Crime Statistics, intruders were able to break into a home or some other building in about 85% of burglaries.

Most break-ins can be avoided by just taking some simple home security steps. There are several ways to reduce the chance of an intruder breaking into your home. Below are just some of them:

How To Secure Your Home From Burglars

  • Keep the outside of your house well lit at night. Install a sensor light that will come on if someone walks into your front or backyard. You can also install a sensor light that will come on when a car drives up on your driveway.
  • Make sure there are no bushes near your doors and window. The bushes can be a good hiding place for an intruder who does not want to be seen by your neighbors.
  • Install a deadbolt lock on your front and back doors. The deadbolt lock is one of the most effective and cheapest ways to stop an intruder from breaking in.
  • Make sure your windows are locked or at least cannot be raised high enough for an intruder to crawl in.
  • If you buy a big ticket item (a big screen TV, new computer, etc.), try to have it delivered to your home when it's dark outside. Better yet, if you bought it locally, you and a friend can pick it up at the store and bring it home at night yourself. You don't want your neighbors to know you just bought something expensive. It's just an invitation for a would-be burglar to break in.

  • Keep a light on inside your house when you're not there. I know it's not energy efficient, but it's always a good idea to make it seem like someone is home by leaving a light or TV on.

  • If you have a garage, always completely shut the garage door. Don't leave it open a couple of feet to let heat out or something. That's just enough space for an intruder to crawl inside. You definitely don't want this to happen if your garage is attached to your house.

These simple home security tips will help to make your home more secure. One final thing you can do to secure your home from burglars is to install a home security system.

You can also hire a professional monitoring company to monitor your system for you. If the alarm is triggered, the monitoring company will call the house to assess the situation and then call the proper authorities if needed.

I have a home security system installed in my home and I cannot tell you how much peace of mind it gives me every day, whether I'm away from home or sleeping soundly at night.

To know that my home is being protected from intruders gives me one less thing to worry about in life. And it will do the same for you.
