Date Rape Can Happen to Anyone

Date rape is a sexual assault that is committed on a woman by someone she knows. Usually, when people think about a rapist, they think of some hooded stranger lurking in the shadows of some dark alley. Despite this myth, most rapes are committed by men who are known to their victims.

Sexual assaults are disturbingly high on college campuses. This might be because for many young people, going away to college is their first time away from home. Young college students tend to do things that they couldn’t do when living at home. They’ll drink more and some will experiment with drugs. Excessive drinking and drug use can sometimes lead to sexual assault.

No matter the circumstance, if a man is trying to force you to do something you don’t want to do, that is rape. If you tell him “NO” or you try to stop him and he ignores you and continues with the attack, he is committing a crime. It is not your fault. It doesn’t matter if he is your boyfriend, your husband or just a friend, rape is rape.

When you go out on a date, any date can become a sexual assault. If you don’t know the man well and you’re on your first date, let your friends or family members know where you’re going to be. Have your cell phone with you. Take separate cars and meet up with your date. This way, if the date isn’t going well or you don’t feel comfortable with him, you can leave and drive yourself home instead of depending on him to drive you.

Rape can happen to anyone. If you are a survivor of a sexual assault, remember that it was the man who was at fault. He attacked you. He committed the crime which makes him a criminal. You did nothing to initiate the attack on you. The man who raped you is responsible for his own actions and he must pay the consequences of his actions through the justice system.
