There are some simple car security tips that you can use to lower the chances of a thief stealing your car. I know what it's like to have someone try to steal my car. They weren't successful, but it was still frustrating and costly. It cost hundreds of dollars to fix the damage they caused trying to start the car before they finally gave up.

Some of these tips may seem like common sense, but sometimes we can forget to do some of them.

Car Security Tips

When you're away from your car, don't leave anything valuable inside that can be seen just by looking in the window. If you have an Ipod, DVDs, CDs or any packages or boxes on the passenger seats or on the floor, these things make great targets for thieves. Lock them up in the trunk.

Make sure all doors are locked and all windows are rolled up tight when you exit your vehicle. Never leave your key in the ignition when you leave your car, even if it's only for a couple of minutes. A thief could be watching you as you leave your vehicle to run in the house for something. A couple of minutes are all that's needed to jump in your car and steal it.

In the winter time, don't leave your car while you have it running in order to heat it up. There has been an increase in car thefts over the years because of people going back inside the house to warm up while their car is running.

Don't hide a spare key inside the car. Thieves will look in various hiding places hoping to find a key. If you feel you need a spare key, carry it with you.

When you give your car to a parking attendant, only give him your ignition key. Someone could easily copy your home keys or any other keys on your keychain.

Don't keep the original car title in the glove compartment. A thief can use the original title to show proof he or she owns the vehicle.

Parking Your Car

If you have a garage, try to park your car inside it every time. If you don't have a garage, park in the driveway if you have one. If you have to park on the street, park where it's well-lit and there is a fair amount of traffic. You don't want your car parked in a dark area where it can't be seen by other people. Obviously, thieves want to work in the cover of darkness with no one else around.

When parking your car, set the emergency brake. If you have a manual transmission, put the car in gear. You can also turn your steering wheel sharply and take the key out of the ignition which will lock the steering column in place. This will make it more difficult for thieves to illegally tow your car away.

Conclusion

If a thief finds it too much trouble to try to steal your car, he or she will give up and move on. By following these simple, yet effective car security tips, the chances of your car being stolen are greatly diminished.
