Cane Self Defense for Seniors

Cane self defense is a great way to show senior citizens how to protect themselves. Not only can you learn effective self defense techniques, you can also use it for exercise which will delay the onset of physical decline.

What is Cane Self Defense?

It teaches senior citizens how to use a cane to defend themselves from attack. Senior centers and retirement communities across the country are adding these defense classes.

Criminals love to target senior citizens because they think seniors are weaker and can't defend themselves. It's quite disturbing to hear on the news about another senior being beaten, robbed and left for dead. You may not be as agile as younger folks, but you can still do some things to defend yourself.

Cane fighting became popular because of a man named Mark Shuey. He is a Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido expert. He owns Cane Masters. His father was using a walking stick to get around and he knew about reports where seniors were being attacked. He developed a course that showed seniors how to use their cane as a weapon.

You can use any type of cane for self defense. The best type of cane though is a hard wood cane made of hickory or oak. This type of cane doesn't break as easily.

There are several self defense moves that are normally used with your hands and legs that you can use with a cane instead. For example, certain moves involve using your foot to stomp down on the back or side of an attacker's knee. Instead of using your foot, you can use your cane.

You can also use the cane to hit an attacker in the groin area, in the chest, or jab him in the ribcage area. Practicing these moves will help you to become more efficient at executing the moves. That's why it's important to enroll in a self defense class locally that offers cane fighting. It's sometimes called cane fu or combat cane.

Can Anyone use A Cane for Protection?

There is a warning however. If you are not that sturdy on your feet to use these moves, then you might not be able to do this. You might lose your balance. Some people are able to handle executing these self defense moves without too much trouble. Only you can really know what you can or cannot do when it comes to self defense.

If you are not agile enough to do these moves, then carrying a self defense weapon like pepper spray or a personal safety alarm might be better for you. You can always scream and make a bunch of noise in order to draw attention from people who might be in the area. Create a buddy system where you're not walking by yourself back to your home or to the car.

Cane self defense is a great way to learn defense moves. Some people carry a cane even though they don't need it. The cane is for protection only.
