When you take a self defense class, you not only learn some basic physical techniques to protect yourself, but you also learn how to be more aware of your surroundings.
I read an article about some older women who took a self defense class. The instructors gave them some basic advice like using their voices if they find themselves in a dangerous situation.
Yell out "NO!" as loud as you can. Hit the attacker as hard as you can. You can use several self defense moves to kick and hit an attacker.
The main goal is to get away and get to a safe place. You're not trying to beat the attacker up or kill him/her. You're trying to stop the attack and run away to safety.
The other lesson these women learned was to be aware of their surroundings. Look around and notice things and people around you. Look for possible escape routes in case of danger. Don't let yourself be caught off guard.
A self defense class will help you feel more confident and notice people more. You'll feel more secure because you now know how to defend yourself.
