Question: How do you replace an ADT alarm system battery?
Answer: Security systems are different, but usually you just have to find the control panel for your system. It is usually a metal box. It might be located in your basement or a garage.
Open the box. You might need a key. Sometimes the technician will leave the key on top of the box. For other panels, you will just have to unscrew the door in order to open it.
Disconnect the positive and negative leads from the old battery (the leads are colored red and black). Hook up the new battery (red to red and black to black).
If you find corrosion in the area, then it is best to have ADT come out and replace the harness/terminals. If there is no corrosion, then go ahead and replace the battery.
Question: The ADT Safewatch battery light is on and keeps beeping. Do I have to get ADT to replace the battery or can I do it myself?
Answer: The beeping noise means that the backup battery is dying. If you have ADT replace the battery, it will cost you several hundred dollars to have them come out to your home and service it.
Instead, you can go to Radio Shack and buy a rechargeable battery (make sure you get the right battery for your specific security system). Other electronic stores should carry the batteries too.
Find your control panel, and just replace the battery as instructed in the previous question.
Question: What kind of ADT alarm system battery do I buy?
Answer: When you open the control panel, write down the serial number or part number and specifications that are on the old battery. Also write down the physical dimensions. Most security systems use the Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery. Better still, just take the old battery with you to the electronics store so you can show them what type of battery you need replaced.
Radio Shack is a pretty good place to find a replacement battery. Just give them the information you wrote down and they should be able to find the right battery for your system.
Question: My ADT security system keeps beeping and shows a number on the keypad screen. Does this mean one of the sensor batteries needs to be changed?
Answer: Yes. If you see a number on the display when your system keeps beeping, that means one of your door or window wireless sensors needs a new battery. The number tells you in which zone the sensor is located.
Locate the sensor and replace the battery. You can take the old battery to an electronics store and have them find a replacement for you. Make sure you replace the battery exactly the way the old battery was situated in the sensor.
